Not everyone can handle the idea of cutting their dogs nails with dog toenail clippers.
With proper instructions you can trim the toe nails of your pet at home. However, it is important that you know how to do this so ask your veterinarian the proper way to cut your pets nails. The toe nails of dogs vary a lot in shape and hardness so you will need to know how and where to cut with your dog toenail clippers.
A big mistake allot of people make when trying to trim their pets nails is putting them on the floor. Big mistake! Pets are used to you playing with them on the floor and thereby will not stand or sit still. The best thing you can do for your pet and yourself is to put them on a table or counter. This way the dog knows that you are not playing and will hopefully be still. Being still is very important when cutting your pets nails with the dog toenail clippers. You don’t want to hurt your dog in anyway.
If you have a busy household and get allot of phone calls you may want to have a helper with you at this time. You don’t want to leave your dog on the table or counter by itself because of the danger of falling off and getting hurt. Even though you may tell them to sit, they will not do it for very long. So be save and have a helper with you will you trim your pets nails.
Your dog toenail clippers should be sharp so that they will cut quick and neat. They should be of top quality so that the job will be easier for you and your dog. The common types of toe nail clippers are guillotine and scissor variety. Large dogs will normally have harder nails and therefore the scissor type will work better. Smaller pets can use the guillotine type which have an opening for you to place their toe nail into.
The toe nail of your pets have a blood source which is like our “quick” and should not be cut. This will hurt your animal and blood will flow. Go slow when cutting and cut the toe nail about a quarter of an inch from the blood source. If your pet has while nails then you should be able to see where the blood source starts.
Dog toenail clippers will do a nice job if you take your time and don’t get in a hurry.
If you should cut into the blood source of the nail don’t panic. You can use styptic powder to control the bleeding or if you have a styptic pencil which will work also. You might want to get these items before you start trimming your pets nails.
